Cleaner Streets for a Happier Life
September 2016
Most of us understand that litter and a dirty environment have implications on the local economy, but it may surprise you to realise the impact littering can have on wellbeing.
Being comfortable, happy and healthy is what we want for ourselves and our families. A dirty environment can have a detrimental effect on our level of happiness and quality of life.
Research commissioned by Keep Britain Tidy found levels of litter in a neighbourhood has potential for a direct bearing on an individual's mental wellbeing.
There are clear links between environmental issues such as litter, vandalism and graffiti with distress and depression.
The report found that mental wellbeing is correlated with the level of satisfaction of residents with the local area, the time spent outside during leisure time, and feelings of safety and security, all of which are likely to be influenced by the presence (or absence) of litter.
Keep Britain Tidy found that around three-quarters of adults in England are proud of their town or city. One of the main reasons for this is the feeling that their town or city is clean.
I believe that everyone has a right to live in a clean environment. I also believe we each have a responsibility for the environment we live in.
Have you lived in a town or city which has affected your wellbeing?
Have you had a bad experience you want to forget or a positive outcome and have advice to share?
